The Monday Movie Review: Faster Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Monday 8 August 2011

This is a movie that I have been waiting to get round to for a while now, but since I saw Fast Five I decided that maybe antoher actioner starring former wrestler The Rock may be a little to much to take.  Anyway there's nothing on TV this has been sitting there long enough lets give it a try and see what it's like.

Starring: Dwyane Johnson, Billy Bob-Thornton, Maggie Grace and Oliver Jackson-Cohen

The Plot

Driver (Dwayne Johnson) is an ex con, who was roped into being the getaway driver for a bank robbery his brother was planning.  The gang get double crossed Drivers brother gets killed and Driver ends up doing a ten year stretch for his trouble.  Now released from prison he is out to get revenge from the people who hijacked their loot, only to be persued by a veteran cop and egocentric hitman.

The Verdict

Well for starts this movie is 100 times better than Fast Five, so there is one reason to watch it, you want another reason, ok I'll give you one.  It's been a while since I saw Dwayne Johnson kick that much ass and in spectacular fashion to.  The title of this movie is not misleading in anyway, Faster is exactly what it says on the tin and bearly comes up for breath at any point during one mighty revenge mission.  It's like Johnson back to being the Rock "If Ya Smeeeel, What The Rock Is Cooking" he literally come out and wipes the floor, singular vision only wanting to inflict pain on those who crossed him.

Now that's a pretty impressive first paragraph for the vedict and just like the movie it gets into things pretty quick.  Don't get me wrong I ain't saying that this movie is going to win awards and it's not the best movie I have ever seen but if it's action that you are after then this movie won't lead you far wrong.

Johnson is back to doing what he does best, in movies like The Rundown, Walking Tall and Doom, some would probably say this is the perfect movie for him.  They would probably be right because of his size you actually beleive he really is that hard and capable of what he does in these type of movies.  That's not critisizing, I mean Hugh Grant knows what he's good at and sticks to it so why shouldn't Dwayne Johnson.

Billy Bob, is pretty good here to.  A down and out cop coming up to retirement who has managed to get himself hooked on alcohol and drugs.  But don't be fooled he's still as shap as a knife and his part in the story is more than you expect, see if you get it before I did.  Which was the end of the movie by the way.  The other hitman named Killer (Cohen) is beleivable here to but for me a little to posh and Clive Owen like and his girlfriend Lily (Maggie Grace), well need I say more.

This movie is the perfect DVD for a saturday night filled with beers and popcorn with a good twist thrown in at the end and I can't say better than that.

Would I watch it again?

I would, maybe not on DVD but when it comes to TV I will probably see it again and again.
