Review: DEXTER 6.3 - Smokey and the Bandit

Tuesday, 18 October 2011

Good to see that the preview didn’t disappoint and just show us all the best bits, this was another solid week for TV’s best show throwing up a couple of surprises but keeping the lid on the mystery surrounding Travis and Dr Geller.

This week was all about another serial killer, one who Dexter was himself fixated with when he was in high school, The Tooth Fairy (not The Rock), Walter Kenny is now 70 years old and living in a retirement village unleashing his serial killer side on occasion when he’s not on the golf course.  Just as the story was coming about I was starting to think that maybe Dexter had it wrong and maybe Walter was just the biggest asshole on the go, I thought maybe Dr Geller was the Tooth Fairy and he was training up young Travis on his dentistry skills.

Now I have to mention Masuka as always, this guy is awesome and no matter where you work you always get a Masuka.  His new intern Ryan Chambers (Brea Grant) is really starting to freak me out a little though.  Could Dexter have some inter officer serial killing competition on his hands?  I think maybe he could just like Dexter, Ryan has been studying notorious serial killers for years, she even painted her finger nails in the same way one serial killer painted his victims, now that’s weird.  We will wait and see weather she turns out to just be a really geeky lab geek or some serious competition for Dexter.

Back to the main story of the night now, Dexter seemed to take a bit of a liking to old Walter who questioned “do you get off hanging out with corpses?”, yeah he does actually Walter, that’s his thing.  This and the golfing trip really cracked me up, they should have trailed the Tooth Fairy story for at least another episode, this guy was hilarious, I know he deserved the M99 treatment but he was pretty funny.

Dexter was of course doing his background checks on Walter which resulted in him being shown the lockup, or Walter’s lair as it probably should be known.  Dexter managed to get in and take a look but, would you really want to sit in that chair?  Considering the magazines Walter took in there with him I would say not, although he wasn’t in there to long but at his age…..Who knows?

They seem to be keeping the Dr Gellar and Travis side of the story pretty tightly wrapped right now, no doubt these two guys are pretty warped, well that’s definite for Gellar but I think Travis is simply being led down a path.  Possibly Gellar’s fall guy when things go pear shaped.  I have to say also I’m pretty impressed with Colin Hanks right now, I haven’t seen to many of his movies but just as you would expect his acting skills are stellar and I think come later in the season there should be some real big show downs between him and Dexter.

I’m really looking forward to the Brother Sam story being developed also, again Mos Def isn’t someone I have seen a lot of acting wise but he proves week on week he can cut it with the best of them, again his role this season is not totally clear as yet, is he straight now?  Or does he still have the dark side to him?  I really think it will develop in the way I mentioned last week with him and Dexter becoming good friends.  Will that mean he finds out what Dexter does in his spare time?  Will he help Dexter deal with that?  Or will Dexter be forced to deal with him when he does find out?

Another great episode with Travis and Gellar chalking up another victim, or at least it seemed that way, we didn’t see them actually kill anyone but then again we didn’t see Dexter kill Walter but I think that’s a safe bet.

Dexter season 6 body count: 5

EP 1: Ben (ambulance driver/technician)
EP 1: Roger (ambulance driver/technician)

EP 1: Joe Walker (High school reunion, college Football jerk)
EP 2: Julio Benes (Gang banger)

EP 3: Walter Kenny (The Tooth Fairy)

Dexter continues Sunday October 23rd at 9pm on Showtime

New Music Single Releases: 17th October 2011, NERO, KELLY CLARKSON, NIKI and THE DOVE, NICKI MINAJ

Got this weeks new music releases as always for you today, all these are out now an available to buy or download, what's your favourite?

Kelly Clarkson – Mr Know It All What's the best American Idol or X Factor US?  Kelly would probably argue that American Idol is the best being the shows original winner back in 2002 she is regarded as the most successful talent show winner ever.  Can't say I have really liked any of her music, I certainly don't have any of her albums and I'm not to crazy on this new song.

You may have heard of these guys!

ASA – Why Can't We Never heard of this lady but, just in case you are interested she is a Nigerian singer/songwriter who concentrates on soul and jazz music, not my cup of tea but if that's what you like then there you go.

Bombay Bicycle Club (top), Fanfarlo
Bombay Bicycle Club – Lights Out Words Gone A four piece indie band from London, England.  I quite like these guys but can't say I'm to fixated on this new tune  which is taken from their fourth album "A Different Kind Of Fix".

Alex Clare – Up All Night A new artist who I haven't heard of, that's why when looking this guy up I was expecting to find a woman.  He is a guy, a British guy actually who released his debut album in July this year.

Baxter Dury – Trellick An English singer/songwriter who I haven't heard of, he has been on the go quite a while, since 2002 actually.  He is the son of Ian Dury, I haven't heard of him either but apparently he is pretty famous.

Fanfarlo – Deconstruction An English indie rock band put together in 2006 by some Swedish dude, this song is crap and they have only ever released one album, hopefully it will be the last.

Nero – Crush On You Not to be confused with the 5th Emperor of the Roman Empire.  The guys are a two piece electro drum and bass outfit from London, England.  I can't say I'm usually into this type of thing but I am strangely drawn to this song, I don't like all of the electro break downs but the beat does go well with the female vocalist they are sampling over the top, and the video is pretty weird.  The song is taken from their album "Welcome Reality", enjoy.

Heard of these?

The Japanese Popstars – Take Forever These guys are a electro outfit from Northern Ireland, I hadn't heard of them but they have won quite a few awards in the DJ world, being a former DJ I probably should have heard of them but never mind.  I don't really care for this song but I do like the single cover.

The Japanese Popstars (top), Metronomy
The Joy Formidable – Cradle A three piece band from North Wales.  Their debut album "The Big Roar" was released in January this year and seems as if it's done better in the US than it did in the UK, it reached number 8 in the states whilst only managing to climb as high as 31 in the UK album charts, this song is pretty good if you like it loud, I really wouldn't advise it if you have a bad head.

Metronomy – Everything Goes My Way Another English band for you now this new song is taken from their third album "The English Riviera" which was nominated for the Mercury music prize, it's not my cup of tea, that's pretty much the case with most of this weeks releases.

Nicki Minaj feat. Rihanna – Fly The R&B star from Trinidad & Tobago is back with her new single which will no doubt be a hit as it features Rhianna, the song is not my idea of good music and for the video, well Rhianna is wearing far to many clothes for my liking.

Niki & The Dove – The Drummer This is a new band from Sweden and they are the reason I enjoy this post so much, sometimes I come across some truly great music that gets my foot tapping, haven't heard of these guys?  Check out the video for "The Drummer" below.  There is no one called Niki in the band and no Dove's feature in the video but you should definitely check these guys out.

Lana Del Ray – Video Games An American singer/songwriter who is very mellow, great voice no doubt but if I had to listen to this song for prolonged periods of time I think self harm issues may develop.

Toddla T – Streets So Warm A rapper with a name like Toddla T, I was seriously expecting this guy to be from L.A or something, maybe even Jamaica turns out he's actually from Sheffield, can't say I'm to excited about his latest release.

Movie Review Time: MAGA PYTHON vs GATOROID (TV 2011) Starring Deborah Gibson

Monday, 17 October 2011

This made for TV movie carry on and watching SyFy is really starting to become to much of a gulity pleasure for me, by now I should know what to expect and really should just stop being lazy and reach for my DVD player.  Never the less another SyFy movie down the hatch and reviewed for your enjoyment, prepare for shocking horror, sorry I mean laugh's!

Starring: Deborah Gibson, Tiffany, A Martinez and Kathryn Joosten

The Plot

Hold the phone, there is a crisis in the Florida Everglades.  It has been taken over by giant Pythons who are wiping out the Alligator population in alarming circumstances.  Turns out the only way to change the fortune of the nationl park is to feed the native Alligators with Chickens (dead one's) which have been laced with steroids in order to pump them up to the max.  Lot's of people get eaten, a couple don't and hey ho there you go.

The Verdict (Terrible would cover it)

Fake looking monsters who don't even look like they belong in the set, bad editing which makes said monsters look like they don't belong and terrible acting from pretty much the entire cast of this movie who at times struggle to even look at the same part of the screen where the creature is supposed to be.

It really was this bad!
I think this is the worst effort I have seen from SyFy in a while, this movie was made for TV this year (2011) and with that you would expect the editing and CGI to move along, sadly on this occasion it simply doesn't and this is as cheesy as cheesy gets.  In fact half way through this I could easily have switched it off and I would say I enjoy Jake And The Neverland Pirates on Disney Junior more than I enjoyed this movie, trust me it's actually better edited.

Seriously, some movies do get wrongly branded don't they?  This movie is billed as a monster thirller by SyFy.  WOW, this should be good then. The last moster thiriller I watched from them was Swamp Shark (2011) a movie which like this is very tounge in cheek but a whole lot better with story, characters, editing, pretty much everything really.  This really should go down as a monster comedy, seriously.  It may well have had more viewers had they done that and that really is what we should expect when you see the DVD cover.

It just keeps getting better!
The characters are terrible and their acting....Well, with no formal acting skills I think I could have done a better job if I'm honest.  The director says watch this Tennis ball that's where the creature will be, that can't be difficult can it?  The two cops or park rangers, what ever they are there as wooden and hammey as they come, I can't think they have to many scripts sitting on their desks right now.

This is a monster comedy like I have said above, and like me the only reason you could have for leaving this on would be that you are laughing so hard at everything that is so terrible in the movie you simply can't control yourself to change the channel.

Would I watch it again?

Unless someone taped me to the sofa, laced me with alcohol or narcotics then I don't think I will be watching this movie again.

Rating: M (and that's being generous)

Review: HOMELAND 1.1 - Pilot

I’m actually watching this show on catch up, I read a review on the pilot episode and thought I ought to give it a look.  I have to say I am really impressed with this show and if the Pilot is anything to go on then I think cable network Showtime may well have another hit on their hands here.

The show starts with a US Marine raid on an Iraqi Compound, there they find a locked room, being the curious type they decide to take a look and stumble upon a US marine Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) who went missing in action (MIA) 8 years earlier and is presumed dead, he is sent back to the US with a heroes welcome in store one problem though.  CIA operative Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) formally worked in Iraq and remembers some Intel one of her sources gave her that an American marine had been turned and was now working for a terrorist named Abu Nazir.

Mathison tries to convince her commanding officer, deputy CIA director David Estes (David Harewood) that they should be monitoring the activities of Brody especially after the intelligence she received.  Estes won’t help nor will Mathison’s most trusted friend Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), all she can do not is set up her own illegal surveillance in the home of the war hero.

Being MIA for 8 years and presumed dead brings it’s own problems for Sgt Brody, who returns home to his wife and children, his wife Jessica Brody (Morena Baccarin) has moved on with her life and is now sleeping with his best friend Mike (Diego Klattenhoff), his two children Dana (Morgan Saylor) and Chris (Jackson Pace) have not seen him for so long and remember hardly anything about him.  That should bring us some good tense moments during the series, his wife clearly does not love him anymore we saw that when his torture scars where unveiled to her, que loveless one sided sex (he hasn’t had any for 8 years) and crying.  Brody isn’t stupid though he knows something is going on, he just needs to figure out what.

Will Brody turn out to be dirty and working for a terrorist group as Mathison thinks?  Maybe, all the flashback we have seen up to now are of Brody or his marine colleague being tortured.  Only problem is when his colleague is getting tortured or beaten to death it’s Brody who is doing the beating.  Is that because he was under threat?  Or have they turned him as Mathison expects?  He has already lied a couple of times since his arrival back on US soil, firstly to his wife saying he was stuck in Virginia being questioned by the CIA, when really he was meeting up with his former colleagues widow to tell her what had happened.  He also lied to Mathison about knowing who the terrorist in the picture was, why?  Does he know more?  Or is he a double agent?

The show is written by the people who brought us 24, so in that case you would expect it to be this good, they have delivered big time in my opinion.  The show is gripping, it has a great concept and shows some real potential that will keep us glued for however many episodes they churn out (10 at the moment).  The stories which could come up look great and the cast were all brilliant in this opening sequence, I can’t wait to catch up with more of Homeland.

Weekly News: GUNS Found On WORLD WAR Z Set, NOEL GALLAGHERS HIGH FLYING BIRDS, JAVIER BARDEM In BOND 23

Sunday, 16 October 2011

Shit! Cops.

First off this week I thought we would start with a bit of a laugh at Brad Pitt’s very costly expense.  I didn’t know this but apparently Brad owns his own production company called Plan B, they, well Pitt is currently producing the upcoming Zombie movie World War Z which he will also star in along with Lost’s Matthew Fox and The Killings Merielle Eno’s

Here's the funny bit!  The movie is currently being shot in Bucharest and apparently up to now some fans have not been to happy at the fact the movie had moved away from the book a little.  Now though Slash Film are reporting that the production of the movie may have one very big comparison to the book which is very realistic.  GUNS.  That’s right guns, the Bucharest set was visited earlier in the week by Bucharest’s Anti Terrorism swat team who apparently were non to pleased with the supposed “prop” machine guns.  Problem was they where actually real machine guns and were in full working order and are illegal to transport.  Brad Pitt is said to be furious, I think someone may be getting fired.

Some Noel Gallagher news for you now, he is all over the news and this site right now, thanks largely to the fact that his debut solo album “Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds” is due in stores on Monday 17th October.  The pre-order sales of his album are currently looking like he will land on the No1 spot ahead of 2010 X factor finalist Olly Murs.  Noel’s album is selling Olly's out by 13%.

What’s even better for Noel though is the album is way ahead of his fiercest rival, younger brother Liam’s band Beady Eye, there debut album “Different Gear, Still Speeding” was moderate but at this point “High Flying Birds” is selling it out by over 200%.  That left Noel in some what of a reflective mood and he decided to have a little rant about the charts, as always his little rant is very amusing and you can check it out in the video, unfortunately I couldn't get the video to embed here but go HERE and you can view it at NME.COM.

Bond 23 news now, or should that be Skyfall news.  The title Skyfall has not been officially announced as yet but that’s the one coming out the rumour mill.  The real news though is straight from the horse’s mouth so to speak.  Javier Bardems mouth precisely, he has released a statement confirming he will play the role of a bad guy in the new Bond movie.

There is nothing official about how many bad guys there will be, just one confirmed at this point and a strong rumour that Ralph Finnes may be involved but, as a bad guy.  Can you see it?  Conformation has also come that a beautiful French actress named Berenice Marlohe will also start in the movie, probably the love interest or double crossing spy and also confirmed is Ben Wishaw who is currently shooting the Wahcowski brother’s “Cloud Atlas”.  So nothing to official but there will be a press conference next month with more official details and it will hopefully confirm another rumour that the final scene of the movie will be shot at Duntrune Castle, Argyll, Scotland.

TV Previews: DEXTER 6.3 "Smokey and the Bandit", HOMELAND 1.3 "Clean Skin", TERRA NOVA 1.4 "Runaway" and PERSON OF INTEREST 1.5 "Judgment"

What’s happening in your favourite show this week?  Well this is your best place to find out with preview videos of Dexter, Homeland, Terra Nova and Person of Interest for you.  Do you like this post?  Let me know.  I’m hoping it can become a more permanent fixture here on a Sunday and it seemed to do pretty well last week.

I’ll go with Homeland first this week as I’m trying to catch up with it right now so I can review it, I don't want to give to much away to myself at this point so all I'll say for this episode is that it looks like another great installment with things really kicking up a gear and the Brody family reluctantly agree to a television interview following the return of their hero.

Next my personal favourite Dexter is back this week with the third episode of the sixth season named “Smokey and the Bandit”, I was really impressed last week remember following the introduction of Brother Sam (Mos Def), a reformed criminal who seems to have mended his way.  We still don’t know to much about Travis or Professor Geller but it looks like this week they are taking their killing to an all new twisted level.  Elsewhere Dexter is given a glimpse into his future when a serial killer from the past makes a re-appearance while Debra is uncomfortable in her new job as lieutenant.

Have to mention Terra Nova I suppose, it showed some real promise during the two hour premiere, the second instalment was ok then last week really disappointed me.  I realised then Terra Nova is nothing more than a family show that’s probably designed for parents to sit with their children and watch.  I still haven’t decided weather to keep up with America as I have been or just watch this at UK pace, maybe I’ll see what epsidoe 4 “The Runaway” is like before I make my decision.  This episode looks like it’s going to get back to the core concept of Terra Nova and The Sixers.

Last but not least this week it’s Person of Interest, this show really kicked into action during episode 4 and this week’s preview to episode 5 “Judgment” looks just as promising.  Last week did not really have an ending with us left wondering what happened to Andrew, did Reese Shoot him?  Or, did he shoot himself?  I not holding my breath that we will find out as this week seems like a whole new story.

Review: PERSON OF INTEREST 1.4 - Cura Te Ipsum

Saturday, 15 October 2011

I'm back to loving this show again, why?  This episode was great in my opinion fast paced action, drug cartels, corrupt police officers a nurse with a dark side and an interesting little twist.  What more do you want in a TV show?  Person of Interest really brought itself back this week and seeing the preview for next weeks show, it looks even better again.

I was really looking forward to seeing some ass kicking during this episode and that's exactly what we got, eventually.  The initial build up was still interesting though, a nurse who works all day plays all night, why?  A Wall Street worker who seems pretty clean cut until his horrible past in uncovered by Reese.  Add in Reese's police mole and the Mexican drug cartel who are into him for pay offs then you can expect plenty twists and turns.

I liked the way that Finch decided to help out a little on the operational side of things this week, he got involved right at the beginning faking an illness in order to switch the pager the DR Megan Tilman was using at the hospital, whilst there he set up a little covert CCTV system to watch her at work.

Onto the corrupt cop now Detective Lionel Fucso (Kevin Chapman), he has been in Reese's pocket for a few weeks now, that's what happens when you try to shoot this guy.  Fucso was having problems with a local drug cartel since Reese wiped out there money supply taking out all the corrupt cops they need there $1m from somewhere, Fucso may just have been it.  When he asked for Reese's help with them I'm thinking say yes, not because I like Fucso's character I just wanted to see Reese kick there asses.  Luckily for all us viewers that's exactly what we got to see with another little insight into John Reese.  He can speak Spanish, he has obviously spent time in Mexico during his time in the CIA and that helped him out of a rather sticky situation this week.

I think this episode treated us to one of the most intense stories yet, that really came through for me when Reese escaped his Mexican captors and caught up with DR Tilman at the diner, at the time she had Andrew the Wall Street banker in the back of her van and was just on her way to committing the perfect murder.  She takes a sit down with Reese realising he knows who she is and what she's about to do.  He manages to talk her out of it and leads Mr Wall Street off on his own little path.

Again this scene lead us to a little more insight of John Reese, during the first couple of episodes he had flashbacks to a hotel room where he was with his wife (presumably), he told Dr Tilman that he lost someone close to him during the episode and during the diner sit down Dr Tilman attempted to get some more out of him regarding it, he done well to avoid the subject but looked very awkward at the mere mention of it.  Answers will come to that hopefully.  Reese also asked Finch the question why? this week, meaning why does he do the job.  Finch's answer was that he has his reasons, what are they?  Hopefully that should become more apparent to.

Trouble could be brewing up for both Reese and Finch in the form of Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson), she is looking more and more into the casino robbery and has contact with Finch, although she doesn't know his real name, well maybe she does and Finch is an alias.  Once Reese had dealt with the Mexicans he got some photo's of another corrupt cop in order for Fucso to get a job back as a detective working with Carter, this is of course for him to scupper Carters attempts to find him but, will it work?  Could the corrupt cop come good?

This was a really good installment to the show and probably was one of the best story lines they have fitted into 50 minutes so far.  One thing though!  What happened to Andrew?  Did Reese shoot him in the leg?  Has he killed him?  Or, would Andrew have shot himself? (probably in the leg).

Featured Artist: THEOPHILUS LONDON

I can not even begin to tell you just how f*@king cool this guy is, honestly take it from me his music has inspired me to another post.  I should really have been writing other stuff right now to enable this site to function but a night on YouTube and Theophilus London's Vevo channel changed that very quickly, I heard one of his songs earlier in the day by chance got to YouTube later and have been sitting here since just listening to this guy!  Maybe this could become a new post, a weekly featured artist....I'm already dreaming up next weeks.

I'm just making comparisons, 80's, retro, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls and Jamiroqai, WHAT?  Yeah that's right Jamiroqai the ultimate in funk from the 90's.  I would ultimately match this guy to him only he is better and a hell of a lot cooler.  Hip hop with real funk this guy is going places and fast.  His second album Times Are Weird These Days (first full length) is available in stores and online now, I have added it to my collection already, this ain't an album review though and I've just picked some randoms from his first album and the mixtape which made him famous.

Born on the island of Trinidad in 1987 London moved with his family to Brooklyn, New York where he was raised, he has massive musical influences in his life including Michael Jackson and Prince.  His diverse genre of music is sometimes described as a new hip hop with critics saying his music draws from a range of styles including  R&B, post-punk, electro and soul-pop.  Did they forget about hip hop?

His albums started with mixtapes back in 2008 when he released "Jam", following that he released "This Charming Man Mixtape" in 2009 (I have that one) and then in 2010 he was back with another tape "I Want You".

In 2011 he released his first EP "Lovers Holiday" which went down well, then unofficially he released an album named "The Charming Man" (don't know much about that) and that brigs us to "Times Are Weird These Days" his first official full length debut album.

Following a performance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in June 2011, critics raved "Theophulis London is going to be big, very big.  The buzz has been building for some time".

The first video for you to check out is "Century Girl" featuring Devonte Hynes.  I love the vibe to this great beat and at times you think you are listening to LL Cool J.

The next video is "Hey Wonderful" which features music from the Stevie Wonder hit "Love Light In Flight".  Theophilus has taken the beat and put his own lyrics over the top, I think it's a great effort and one which really works for me it gives you that 80's vibe modern rap / R&B and even features the corus by Stevie Wonder.

I absolutely loved this next track when I first heard it, there is no official video but the guy who made this one up from pictures has done a sublime job along with getting superb audio "Night Ridin" is the title of the track and it was taken from "The Charming Man" mixtape, the track is something you would hear in a proper R&B styled bar, had it been out at the time this would no doubt have featured in the Save The Last Dance soundtrack.

One more song to mention for you, it featured on the mixtape last week so you will have to go HERE to check out the brilliant video for Theopilus London's new track "I Stand Alone".

I can really see this guys music coming up in a lot of movies and TV shows, it's just got that uber cool beat, my foot has literally been tapping all night whilst writing this, you just get the picture of 80's America, low riders and some ultra cool movies.  Tarrantino must be rubbing his hands thinking of the next movie to pen whilst listening to this.

New UK Cinema Releases: 14th October 2011 REAL STEEL, THE THREE MUSKETEERS and FOOTLOOSE

Friday, 14 October 2011

Cinema this weekend?  Ok go on then but, hold up there may not be that much on so I’m here as always to give you the run through of what’s worth your time this week and what’s not.  There is a pretty big movie out along with a couple of mediocre ones, so lets check them out below.

“He is like a piece of iron”, that’s how Ivan Drago described Rocky in the 1985 fourth instalment, you want something like that this weekend then your local cinema may have just the thing for you where the fighters are in fact made of iron, well steel actually but let’s not get hung up on technicalities.

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo and Anthony Mckie

Real Steel is set in the future a time when Robot boxing is the top sport in the world, it centres around the story of Charlie Kenton (Jackman) a struggling boxing promoter who finds an old discarded robot and feels he can train it up to be a champion, however in getting to know his robot Kenton also discovers that he has an 11 year old son who also wants to get to know him.

I really feel this movie could be looking forward, once the UFC fighters are satisfied they have beat the s&!t out of each other, then moving onto fighting robots may well take off as the top sport.

Who likes musketeer movies?  Nope me neither, although I tell a little lie I liked The Man In The Iron Mark starring Leanardo Di Caprio, but I really think one you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all, for one.

Starring: Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Milla Jovovich and Orlando Bloom

The Three Musketeers follows a story similar to what I have heard of in pretty much every musketeer movie, a few down on their luck musketeers team up with the young hot-headed D’Artagnan in an effort to defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous boss.  They win (probably) seize the French throne and cause a war, sounds great….Not.

This is one movie I can pretty much guarantee you that I won’t be watching this weekend if you hadn’t guessed already.

Now to the third movie this week, it’s one which I never actually saw the original to, that was released back in 1984 (I was 2) and starred Kevin Bacon.  Apparently it’s pretty good but don’t take my word for it.

Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough and Dennis Quaid

The story centres on Kenny MacCormack (Wormald), he is a city guy who moves to a small town where rock ‘n’ roll and dancing have been banned.  Being an outsider MacCormack has a rebellious side and I presume he starts to dance to rock ‘n’ roll or something like that.

I could maybe tell you more had I seen the original but sorry, I haven’t.  Will I see this one?  Probably not.

Ok last one to mention now as always I will lead you in the direction of IMDB, over there you can check out the trailer for DOLPHIN TALE.  It’s a family drama, perfect if you have kids and it’s about a dolphin who loses his tale in a crab trap.  Sounds like a good Sunday afternoon family movie to me and comes with a pretty impressive cast including Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr and Kris Kristofferson.

Midweek Mixtape: NOEL GALLAGHER, STEVIE WONDER and JASON DERULO

Thursday, 13 October 2011

Some good music for you this week but not all new, one new song a one which should have been here a couple of weeks back and then an old classic from the 80's I hope you have noticed that this site has taken a more musical feel lately.  Not just one post on music anymore, two currently and I’m looking to make it three then hopefully 4, just busy figuring out what they will be.  I have the third it will be a featured artist post, just need the fourth I’ve got an idea but what about you guys, any suggestions?

First up to mention in the mixtape this week is Noel Gallagher, he is pretty much all over this site right now as he is everywhere with the release of his highly anticipated first solo album “Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds” due out in stores October 17th.  If you are on his official website you can hear the b side streamed live tonight.  This new single AKA..What A Life will be released next Monday, you have to check out the 8 minute video featuring Gallagher friend Russell Brand, don’t get to bored make sure you stick around for the music, it’s good I promise.

I've been listening a lot lately to a new artist by the name of Theophulis London (amazing go check him out).  Listening to his music pointed me in the direction of this Stevie Wonder classic Love Light In Flight, I'm sure I don't need to tell you to much about Stevie so I'll take the oppertunity to plug movies, music & television YouTube channel it's a work in progress but more and more videos and trailers will be added, be sure to subscribe.  Back to Stevie now check out this video taken from the 1984 movie The Woman In Red.

You know this guy, or at least you should.  Jason Derulo has featured here many times now on both mixtapes and the former must have songs for your iPod posts.  Hi new single It Girl is taken from his latest album future history.  The album was released back in September with four of the singles (including this one) being promoted on iTunes before the release, unfortunatly that didn't really help and the album never made top 10.

Trailer Time: STRAW DOGS (2011) and RETREAT

I’ve got a couple of awesome trailers for you this week, both of which are similar.  Maybe not in story line but in the format they are done.  Both have that captive in your own home feel and look as if they are going to be really gripping movies.

I have to be honest from the off here and tell you that I hadn’t even heard of the Straw Dogs original released in 1971 starring Dustin Hoffman, what I do know or have at least heard about it is that it’s a pretty brutal movie and looking at the trailer for this latest remake it seems to be no different.

David Sumner is a L.A screenwriter who relocates to his wife’s hometown, all is well at first but before long the couple start to get along not so well.  Tension then begins to grow between the local community and themselves.  Everyone has a braking point is the movies tagline and James Marsden’s just seems to be a little higher than everyone else’s,

As well as Marsden the movie also stars Kate Bosworth who plays his wife and chief antagonist Peter Scarsgard check out the trailer and let me know what you think.

Next up is a new one starring Cillian Murphy, why is he so good at being creepy, he played Scarecrow in Batman Begins remember and you read here last week that he is reprising the role for the Dark Knight Rises.  I have seen quite a few of Cillian’s movies and I can’t really recall a bad one.

Kate (Thandie Newton) and Martin (Cillian Murphy) are a couple in London who go to Blackholme Island, a remote and unpopulated place near Scotland in order to get away from recent events.  All is going well at the retreat until Jack (Jamie Bell) is washed ashore, or so it seems.  He brings news to the couple that a deadly airborne virus is sweeping through Europe and they must stay indoors.  Before long the couple realise that Jack is not all that he seems.

This movie looks great and the three names mentioned above are the only people in it, take a look at the trailer below.

Review: TERRA NOVA Season 1 Episode 3 - What Remains

Wednesday, 12 October 2011

What does remain?  That's a pretty good question.  Can I ask one of my American readers does this show air at 7pm or 8pm on Fox?  The 8/7 thing they promote confuses me.  If it starts at 7pm then in England it would just say aires at 7pm, saves any confusion.  I only ask this as the show goes out in the UK at 8pm on Monday night, after watching this episode I am wondering why.

I really wanted to like this show, a completely unknown cast (almost) just like Lost, unfortunately for Terra Nova it's not Lost, well it is Lost actually.  Lost in the ether of TV and can not grant itself with any comparisons to J.J. Abrams hit TV show.  You may remember last week when I reviewed the third episode (wrongly titled it was actually the second episode) I said I didn't enjoy that to much, it really drew away from what was a pretty impressive two part premiere, like any TV show I thought that may just be a thing for one week.  Turns out not as this episode was terrible in my opinion, I can't say I enjoyed it at all.

I tell a little lie, I did laugh at one point when Commander Taylor and Dr Shannon were at the scientific out-post, he went out looking for a missing doctor and reported back to Shannon that they "found his boot" her reply "so he is out there bear foot" Taylor says "nope his feet where still in the boots"

Funny, after last weeks review Ruben mentioned in comments that the show reminded him of Star Trek Next Generation, I have not seen that show, I have seen bits and pieces though and can say from what I have seen in any Star Trek movie or show is what I saw during this whole episode.

It did remind me of Jurassic Park at one point, the very beginning where the DR ran out into the jungle and was eaten by that Dinosaur, it kind of reminded me of the scene where the guy was on the porta potty in the movie.

Following this weeks episode I am reminded of a UK TV show named PrimeEvil, very similar to Terra Nova it works on the idea of portals but, instead of the characters going back to prehistoric times the Dinosaurs come into the modern world with the occasional visit to cave man times from the cast.  I didn't watch that show to intensely, it's ok but is on here in the UK at 7pm on ITV, not great, especially when you have kids.

I will watch Terra Nova again next week in the hope that it does develop into something but, if I'm guessing right that it aires in the US at 7pm then I can't see it doing to well or getting any better action wise.  Since the premiere it's got a little more corny and if I were you then I wouldn't expect me to be able to come up with to may words to say about it every week.

Midweek News: CHERYL COLE New Album, X FACTOR Viewing Figures Down

Some music news first for you this week, although it’s Cheryl Cole so can we really call it music?  We can from now on, following her successful debut album in the UK and US Cole and her producer and friend Will.i.Am have confirmed they are currently working on the Geordie lasses third album.

Since Girls Aloud have been “ON A BREAK” Cheryl has carved herself a successful solo career even making in roads into TV, we all know how that went when she wind up in America on Simon Cowell’s new mega US X Factor.  Now fully out of hiding from that embarrassment Cole has now set to work in the studio again with an album of songs ready to be recorded.

This album is going to be like nothing we have heard from her in the past, unlike her last album of pop junk which saw one song feature Will.i.Am (maybe more), the duo have hinted that collaborations are already lined up with rap superstars Eminem, Niki Minaj and R&B artists Rhianna and Usher.  Along with that there is a slight rumour that she may well also be collaborating with hit DJ and producer David Guetta.

Things seem to be on the up for Cole once again and this is one album I can see myself taking a listen to, Cole has also just signed on to star in her first Hollywood movie What To Expect When Your Expecting which will also star Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz.

Some more music news now, seems I’m on a bit of a role this week although this sort of combines music and TV.  NME.COM are reporting that X Factor viewing figures are down 2 million from where they were in the 2010 live shows.  In 2010 the show pulled in 12.2 million for it’s first live show whilst this year it only managed 10.4 million still not bad for the UK but, what’s the problem?

The new judging line up?  I don’t think so for me the judging panel is a good one, apart from Louis Walsh, can’t stand the guy.  The inclusion of Gary Barlow for me is a great effort, he is a proven musician and songwriter and has really done well since joining the show.  Tulisa, again nothing to complain about obviously the new eye candy replacing Cheryl Cole but, also a proven artist and songwriter.  Then you have Kelly Rowland, I certainly have no problem with her.

So what is the problem?  To many twists and turns would be my guess, and the fact that it’s on TV far to much.  Personally I’m a little sick of it.  The first live show this year went on for two hours 30 minutes, way to long in my opinion.  I know this year they had 16 acts to get through rather than 12 but it’s still to long and some of it can be cut down if they take out all the talking.  I didn’t watch the show live I recorded it and watched it back, that only took about an hour, a suitable length of time.

Then you move onto Sunday night and the live results show, no problem with that apart from the fact it’s on for one hour, why?  So we can watch the two live acts who are on Simon Cowell’s payroll for the week.  Then awaiting the judges to make their decision was just ridiculous, if I could have skipped all the pausing I would have “The person I’m taking to the next live show is…………zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz” To long!

I said at the very start of this series of X Factor that I hope they don’t do with the show what they done with Britain’s Got Talent, they turned it into overkill twice a weekend then every night of the week it’s just to much.  Now it looks like the X Factor will be heading in the exact same direction.

Review: DEXTER Season 6 Episode 2 - Once Upon A Time...

Tuesday, 11 October 2011

Did you catch the Dexter preview which I put out yesterday?  If not then I wouldn't bother you've seen the episode now and all I'll tell you is that the previews lived up to their expectations and then some.  One story line I was expecting and one which I think is going to throw in a big friendship or maybe even a twist this season.

The religious theme really has been pushed on this week, not so much from Dexter though.  A new character Brother Sam (Mos Def) or Samuel Wright as he was known in his former life, an ex convict who has come out of prison and at this point would seem to have done some good, setting up a garage and training other ex cons mechanics and bodywork skills.  Is Brother Sam all he seems?

One thing to get out the way first, I loved the scene with Dexter and Debra when she told him that Quinn had proposed to her, exactly the kind of conversation two divorceis should be going through right (that's thanks to Ruben I didn't even know they were married).  I can't remember the exact conversation but it went along the lines of Debra asking Dexter about the proposal, she told him Quinn was a lot better than the s*!t she has had for the last couple of years, probably referring to ex boyfriends from the show but you can't help but imagine that they are secretly having a little dig at each other on set.  Not only did Debra get proposed to this week but she also got made Lieutenant, the youngest one ever in Miami Metro.

For Quinn I feel the tables really have turned, I feel sorry for him this season.  Last season I would have quite happily seen him M99'd and on Dexter's table, I still think eventually he might end up going that way.  Maybe it won't be on Dexter's table though, Debra's dark passenger may well catch up with her and being Quinn's boss she may decide to off with him.  I am probably totally wrong on all of that so just ignore me.

Mos Def has now joined the cast, a welcome inclusion in my opinion.  I knew him as a rapper but, as an actor I have only seen him in 16 Blocks starring Bruce Willis.  In that movie he done a great job and I'm pleased to report that his role as Brother Sam in this season of Dexter looks like it will be no different acting wise, just like Johnny Lee Miller in season 5 Mos Def held his own against Michael C Hall on screen.  This time round though I think Dexter's new main character may well play a bigger role in the whole scheme of things, maybe even running Into a seventh season.

Brother Sam is a reformed criminal remember, Dexter was sure the guy had not shed his dark passenger that easily but, thus far it would seem he has and I'm really looking forward to seeing his character develop.  I'm going to make a little guess and say that Brother Sam is going to become a god friend of Dexter and help on the way to solving what Travis and professor Geller are up to.  Their two characters are still pretty shady up to now we really don't quite know what their up to but it would seem like professor Geller is the ring leader in what looks to be ritual killings.

Masuka makes me laugh he is such a perv, remember last week he selected the intern with the highest grades, unfortunately he fainted on the job so it was welcome back to the hot intern wholikes to come to work partially dressed.  Masuka loves that, I had to include the photo for your pleasure, hey I'm a guy right.  It was also good to see Harry back in full swing this week giving Dexter his little pep talks, second to that Harrison, Dexter's son is also back, they got a bit of a routine thing going on.

I really enjoyed this episode, not quite the action we are used to but entertaining as always and the introduction of Mos Def really went down well for me, I think the inclusion of Colin Hanks was also a pretty cool choice just like his father he is proving to be a quality actor, roll on episode 3.

Dexter Season 6 body count: 4
