New UK Cinema Releases: 20th April 2012, SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN, LOCKOUT and GONE

Friday, 20 April 2012

Plenty going on down your local cinema this weekend and as always here at Movies Music & Television I'm here to tell you what will be worth your time checking out. Let's see, Ewan McGregor is off doing some fishing in a desert, some "guy" is going to a space prison and finally Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter stars as someones sister who has gone missing (I think).

My top pick of the week goes to Lockout starring Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace, Peter Stormare and no one else you'll of heard of.

Guy Pearce plays Snow, a man who is wrongly convicted of espionage in the US (probably his English accent), Snow is offered a chance to make a men's for the crime by travelling to a space prison where violent in-mates have taken control. In order to get off with the charge Snow must rescue the President's daughter Emilie (Maggie Grace, Taken).

Lockout looks like a really good actioner and I have to say they have spent plenty money promoting it via trailers on TV, I don't think you can go wrong with two action packed popcorn eating hours.

Next on the list this week is Salmon Fishing in the Yemen starring Ewan McGregor, Amr Waked, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Tomas

From what I can make of it Ewan McGregor is a British fisheries expert who is called upon by a wealthy Sheik from Yemen, the Sheik wants to bring his favourite past time of Salmon fishing to his country believing it's a way to enrich the lives of his people. Problem is he lives in a desert and needs the help of McGregor to make his dream a reality.

On face value I really didn't think I would have a decent word to say about Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, but I saw Ewan McGregor interviewed on Graham Norton last week and the way he put the movie over really doesn't seem to bad, on saying that I don't think I will be in the cinema cue for a ticket come Saturday night, I mean do you know how much cinema tickets are these days!

Last one this week is Gone starring Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Carpenter, Wes Bentley and Daniel Sunjata

Not to many details on this but basically it follows Jill (Seyfried) a girl who's sister is kidnapped opening up unnerving memories for her, as two years before she herself was kidnapped and now she believes that the serial killer that took her has came back for her sister.

I actually thought that Gone was released here in the UK about a month or so ago and maybe it featured in this post back then, however that may have been a preview screening or something, again there has been plenty money spent on promotion but I don't think I'll be in the cue.

Lockout definitely wins the week for me, although I am a bigger fan of Ewan McGregor than I am of Guy Pearce, but that's by the by. If (and it's a big IF) I want to watch a fishing show I'll put Robson Greens Extreme Fishing (the best one) on TV.

New UK Cinema Releases: 9th March 2012, THE RAVEN, JOHN CARTER and BEL AMI

Friday, 9 March 2012

Can’t say I’m all that excited about what’s at the cinema this week, maybe they have just burnt themselves out in the last couple of weeks.  This week there is a new Disney epic adventure, a new thriller and one romantic drama which stars Twilight’s Robert
Pattinson.

My top release this week would have to go to The Raven starring John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alica Eve and Brendan Gleeson

I haven’t heard a great deal about this but it’s based on the life of poet Edgar Alan Poe, fictionalised of course it follows him on the last days of his life as he peruses a serial killer who's murders mirror those of his own stories.

Probably my pick of the week, although I do think it will be pretty intense and full on, I probably won’t get round to seeing it if I’m honest.

Next up it's the release I’m least excited about, don’t even think the wife will be watching Bel Ami starring Robert Pattinson, Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and Kristen Scott Thomas

Not being interested in this movie at all there is not all that much I can tell you about it, I think it’s a period drama, in which Pattinson stars as Georges Duroy a young man who rises to power in Paris using nothing more than manipulation of women who have high standing in the city.

Sounds fascinating, right? Yeah like me you are giving this a wide birth to can’t say I blame you.

Last one to mention now John Carter starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton and Willem Defoe

This is the new Disney epic I mentioned at the top. It follows John Carter, of course, as he is transplanted to Mars. When on the plant he finds it to be a beautiful place however, Carter finds himself a prisoner of the 12-foot tall green barbarians which inhabit the planet before he make an escape where he meets Dejah Thoris Princess of Helium who is in need of saviour.

I’ve no doubt Disney will probably want to make this some sort of series of movies, it seems to me a bit like Avatar, a movie which I’m yet to see. John Carter would probably have been my top pick but I’m just not into this type of movie, enjoy the trailer.

This Week At The Cinema: SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS

Friday, 16 December 2011

What’s new at the cinema this week?  Well not a lot that’s for sure, in fact scrap that there is actually only one decent movie out this weekend unless you like Chipmunks.  It’s the week before Christmas what do you expect, they hold off until Boxing Day with all the good releases but I’ll post about those ones next week.

That one movie release I was telling you about is Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, now I have to be honest I haven’t actually seen the first Sherlock Holmes starring these two guys, why?  Well I don’t really do this type of movie, I don’t know why but it really just does not interest me all that much.  I have heard that it’s actually pretty good so maybe I’ll put my new Blu-Ray player to good use and get it bought and watched.

Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Rachel McAdams, Jared Harris and Stephen Fry

My interest in this really does not go far, sorry!  Basically Sherlock (Downey Jr) and his sidekick Dr Watson (Jude Law) joins forces to defeat their fiercest rival yet Professor Moriarty.  Take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think.

Ok, I may get round to watching the first one but don’t hold me to it, there are plenty of other movies which are way ahead of this in the pack, unless the first one is so bad that no one else at LoveFilm.com has it rented out in which case I’ll probably get it next week which would of course force my hand.  I was never a fan of Sherlock when it was on TV way back when, I’m not a fan of the current version starring the very well educated Benedict Cumberbatch, but this movie does offer something different to that, first off Jude Law, not my favourite but I can tolerate him and then there is Robert Downey Jr, an actor who has a pretty impressive range.

New UK Cinema Releases: 9th December 2011, PUSS IN BOOTS, A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS and ANOTHER EARTH

Friday, 9 December 2011

Is it a good week for movie releases?  Well I suppose that depends on what sort of movies you like, if you want my opinion then this week is not to unlike last which was pretty bad, this week maybe even worse as Harold and Kumar are back, Antonio Banderas is a cat with a sword and just as scientists in real life discover a planet 100 million light years away from earth which is similar in every way, a movie called Another Earth is released, here goes;

Look into my eyes, I’m sure if Banderas used that line in real life he would probably have women qued down the street ready to claw Melanie Griffith’s eyes out, right?  It’s not a man crush, honest!

Starring: (Voices) Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton

Puss In Boots is the character we all know from Shrek (I’ve only seen the first one), this movie is set before Puss has ever met Shrek or Donkey and I’ll shorten the description for you, basically Puss teams up with Kitty Softpaws (kind of like a bond girl) and Humpty Dumpty, together they are going to steal a golden Goose to clear Puss’ name.

I’m really not interested in this at all but I have to be honest the trailer did make me laugh a few times, firstly Puss is handing out the odd little ME-OW to the ladies, smooth.  Then some guy was going to show him his golden eggs, you can imagine, it finishes with Puss drinking milk from a glass like Lloyd Bridges does in Hot Shots, at least give the trailer a look.  Someone on YouTube has given a very funny comment saying that Puss is Zorro’s pet cat.

The Music in the trailer is Lady Gaga – Americano, enjoy.

I haven’t actually seen any of the Harold and Kumar movies, I read a review on this and following that can say that I won’t be watching this one either.  Didn’t this all start as a spin off from American Pie, these were the two guys other than Finch who were obsessed with Stifler’s Mom, Right?

Starring: Kal Penn, John Cho, Isabella Gielniak and Neil Patrick Harris

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, oh no it’s even in 3D I think the normal theatrical version maybe be unbearable enough.  Following on from their adventure in Guantanamo Bay Harold & Kumar are back for a festive outing.  The usually stoned pals ruin the plans when they burn down Harold’s father in laws prized Christmas tree, why it’s prized I don’t know, will the movie explain it?  Probably not.

Yeah it’s terrible I know, to think during the trailer they even persuade a kid in her car seat to say she has the munchies.  Toilet humour at its best, probably.  Enjoy the trailer.

Lastly for you today is Another Earth, no one really famous in it and to be honest I don’t really fancy this at all, you may recognise one of the actors from Lost.

Starring: Britt Marling, William Mapoter and Matthew-Lee Erlbach

Another Earth has won quite a few awards to this point including at the Sundance festival, it will probably get an Oscar mention somewhere too, I have read what it’s about a guy and a girl who meet following an accident, that’s pretty much all I know.

I watched the trailer and to be honest I was board, though I do find it intriguing regarding the whole Earth 2 idea, especially with the news this week.

Ok as always finally I will shove you in the direction of IMDB, be sure to come back though you can check out the rest of the site, you’ll enjoy it, honest!  Over at IMDB you can check out the trailer for this weeks fourth movie New Years Eve, starring Ashton Kutcher and just about every other Hollywood actor or actress you can think of, I really don’t know what it’s about (New Years Eve, I presume), it kind of reminds me of Love Actually, or some other movie like that where they got a great big A-List cast.  Oh that was it, Valentines Day (2010).

New UK Cinema Releases: 2nd December 2011, THE THING, HUGO and HAPPY FEET TWO

Friday, 2 December 2011

Right, It's December so what do you expect?  Christmas movies for one, and this week there are two to mention in what will be a shorter than usual post with probably only one movie which is worth going to see this weekend, unless you have kids of course.

First one to mention this week, The Thing, another remake of a movie where I have not seen the original which was released in 1982 the year I was born.

Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton and Ulrich Thomsen

The plot confuses me a little here, in a Antarctica research station a graduate student Kate Lloyd and a scientist Dr Sander Halvorsen have a falling out due to the discovery of an alien craft.  Kate sides with helicopter pilot Sam Carter to pursue the alien life form.

I do intend on getting around to seeing this movie so stick around for the review in a week or two, want to see a review now?  Then go see Glen at 1 Man, 365 Movies! he done a great review of it just the other week, it'll be sure to give you a laugh.

Next up is a movie I believe they are calling an epic, Hugo is the new animated featurette brought to us from Martin Scorsese, he done Shark Tale remember?

Starring: Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Lee

Set in 1930's Paris (that's me put off straight away) Hugo follows the life of a 12 year old boy, named Hugo funnily enough.  Hugo lives in the walls of the train station but soon becomes involved in a mystery involving his father and an automaton.

This is supposedly an epic, for me though I'm really just not interested in the slightest it's a kids movie, one which reminds me a little of the Polar Express.  I don't know why as most of Hugo is not animated  and has real people in, I suppose it's a Christmas movie thing.

Ok to Happy Feet Two now, seen the first one?  No me neither and I don't really intend on seeing this one as it's taken a bit of a panning critic wise, that's not to say they are right but the fact I haven't seen the first will keep me away from the theatre this weekend.

Starring: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Pink, Matt Damon, Bradd Pitt and Hugo Weaving

It's about a Penguin called Mumble who can dance, argh how cute, I think Mumble is played by Elijah Wood (don't quote me on that).  Mumble tries to bring the Penguin nations together.

That's really as much as I know, seriously.  I mean what do you want me to say.  I have Mumble'd on long enough, right? Right.  I told you this would not be to long, enjoy the trailer.

New UK Cinema: 25th November 2011, MONEYBALL, DREAM HOUSE and 50/50

Friday, 25 November 2011

Three new movie releases out this week for you, well there’s more of course but I haven’t time to mention them all and you probably wouldn't want to see most of them anyway.  There is a sport movie for you, a comedy movie and a new psychological thriller which I posted the trailer for quite some time ago now.

First off this week, it’s Moneyball the new movie starring Brad Pitt.  I’m quite interested in this one due not only to the sporting storyline but also how close it follows the story of my Football club Newcastle United, take a look at the plot and see if you can draw some comparisons.

Starring: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman

Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, general manager of the Oakland A’s baseball team who are stripped of all their best players and a wage cap is brought in, wanting to win a World Series Beane is forced to look for a new advantage and starts to use statistical data to pick his team, resulting in great success.

Like I said very similar to the story at Newcastle United, apart from the analytics maybe but the same wage cap there has brought a little success our way this season and the movie is based on the success the Oakland A’s enjoyed because of the implementation.  The only thing that put me off a little is the fact it’s about Baseball, I don’t know the first thing about the game.

Now to Dream House the movie which I posted the trailer for quite a while ago now, this would probably go down as my pick of the week, especially if you want something to think about.

Starring: Daniel Craig, Rachael Weisz and Naomi Watts

Craig plays Will Atenton a man who leaves New York and his city job behind to start a new life with his wife Libby (Weisz) and their children in a small quaint New England town.  Will soon discovers that the house they have moved into was once a grisly crime scene and the house is full of memories, deciding to investigate further Will starts to piece together a disturbing puzzle.

I really like the look of this and think out of the three mentioned this week it’s the one I’m most likely to see not just for the interesting premise but the fact I’m also a Daniel Craig fan helps no doubt.

Last one to mention this week is the new Seth Rogan vehicle 50/50, as you would expect is a comedy but not like you’d quite imagine.

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogan and Anna Kendrick

Adam (Gordon-Levitt) is a 27 year old radio program writer who is diagnosed with a rare form of Cancer, with the help of his best friend Kyle (Rogan), his mother and therapist Adam learns what the most important things in life are.

The movie is based on a true story and I caught a TV review on it the other night saying that although the subject matter is very serious it is a very funny movie.

This Weeks Top Movie: Bad Teacher

Friday, 17 June 2011

I started this last week as you know, rather than giving you every movie that is released in cinemas this weekend I will mention the ones worth going to see in separate posts, and as always welcome your comments as to what you think of the new posting regime.

This week's top movie release is Bad Teacher starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel.   I have to be totally honest here this is probably not the sort of movie that I would normally watch but, due to the fact that Cameron Diaz is in it then I think I may be able to stretch it.  Only kidding the movie does look pretty good and as I've mentioned also stars Justin Trousersnake (do they still call him that?), he has made the transition from music star to movie star really well and I think his choices in Alpha Dog, The Social Network and Black Snake Moan have been really well advised, he's just a pretty talented guy I guess.  Mr Segel well you will probably know him best for his role as Marshall Eriksen in How I met Your Mother, a show I've not seen but heard it's pretty good.

Anyway on with Bad Teacher, the title is a little bit of a give away as to what this movie is about really.  Cameron Diaz stars as Elizabeth Halsey a foul mouthed Junior high teacher who is making attempts to woo a colleague.  Halsey has her life pretty well planned out she drinks copious amounts of alcohol takes unbelievable amounts of drugs whilst plotting the whole time to marry her rich sugar daddy fiance.  Things of course don't go to plan Elizabeth is dumped by her fiance and starts to pursue Scott Delacorte (Timberlake) a colleague of hers who is also wealthy, problem being he is also being pursued by another teacher at the school.  Jaosn Segel plays Russell Gettis the gym teacher who is making advances towards Elizabeth.

A comedy movie which should prove a lot of fun I'm sure,  not so sure I would pay the cinema fee but will probably catch it on DVD.  That's the first of two to be going to see this weekend, I'll be back a little later in the day with this weeks second top release.
