Well following on from last weeks disappointing experiment of the weekly cinema releases over at Hubpages I now find myself back here, from now on I think I’ll leave football to Hubpages and keep movies and TV shows exclusively here, much like last week, this weeks releases are not out on Friday, the ones I’m going to mention below actually came out yesterday 24 August 2012. So what we got? Well, there is a brilliant new comedy starring just about every funny man in Hollywood, there is also a new British comedy starring Celebrity Juice front man Keith Lemon and finally a remake of the Three Stooges.
As always I’ll start with what will be the most popular movie of the week, Keith Lemon: The Film, probably not everyone’s preferred choice for the box office topper this week but over here in the UK Keith Lemon is hugely popular thanks to his hit ITV 2 show Celebrity Juice. Also starring in the movie is just about all of Keith’s “celebrity” friends, most of who have been involved with movies and TV in some way or another. I’ll be honest it’s a pretty shitty premise which charts the rags to riches story of TV personality Keith Lemon, real name Leigh Francis, Francis also wrote the movie where he plays his alter ego Lemon who invents a phone with a light up lemon on the back (supposedly the iPhone) that he sells for loads of money, leading him to a life of fame and fortune as well as a relationship with actress Kelly Brook. I’ll be honest I’m actually a big fan of Keith Lemon or Leigh Francis, whatever you want to call him, I loved Celebrity Juice, but for me I think Lemon has sold the alter ego thing to far down the line now, his latest reality TV show Lemon La Vida Loca is deplorable and as much as I may watch this I fear that I will be cringing and switching off after about ten minutes.
Next one to mention this week is The Watch starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughan, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade. Again like Keith Lemon above The Watch comes with a very silly premise, only this time it’s handled Hollywood style in the manner we have come to expect from all involved. The guys basically form themselves a neighbourhood watch team in order to escape the humdrum lives they lead, however the job quickly becomes serious when they realise that the boring town they live in has actually been taken over by aliens who are posing as your typical American suburbanites. Now, “The Watch” has a job on their hands not only to save the town they live in but the entire world.
I saw the trailer for The Watch a while ago now and I have to say it looks really, really funny. It’s not one I would go to the cinema and see but you can be sure that I will be checking it out at some point.
Last one to mention this week is The Three Stooges starring Sean Hayes, Chris iamantopoulos and Will Sassso, I’m pretty sure this is a remake or re-hash although I have never actually seen the original (that I can remember), I have heard it referred to plenty times but never had the viewing experience, which I’ve heard is pretty good fun. All I can think is that this must be the week for stupid and silly movie releases as this like the other two seems to be a no brainer comedy (kind of like Dumb & Dumber, just not as funny). I don’t have to go to much into the plot here but basically Larry, Curly and Moe who work as caretakers in the orphanage where they were brought up end up embroiled in a murder plot which sees them starring in a hit reality TV show. Yeah, looks pretty stupid right? I don’t think I will be in a hurry to see the Stooges at the cinema or on DVD, but who knows? If it gains a big enough following then maybe I’ll be forced into taking a look.
Hello, and welcome to the weekly UK cinema release post which this week comes with a bit of a twist. As some of you will know Movies, Music & Television.com is not the only place I write, I also have commitments elsewhere which have recently been lagging. To make up for that I'm going to start a little experiment, maybe to run for a month or so and see how it goes. From now on the Weekly UK cinema releases will be published at Hubpages, it's all the same once you get there, a bit about the movie, the trailer and what I think it will be like, and more importantly no one will be trying to sell you anything.
This week at the cinema there is not a whole lot going on, The Expendables 2 sees its cinema release and no doubt one of 2012's most anticipated movies will be drawing big audiences all weekend, you can go and check out the trailer for The Expendables 2 right here at Movies, Music & Television if you can't be bothered to jump over to hubpages. Also released in UK cinemas this week is a new Canadian comedy drama named Take This Waltz starring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogan and another couple of people who starred alongside them in some Canadian network TV show named Degrassi High. Last one to mention for the week is a British movie named The Wedding Video, it's a comedy which if you want my honest opinion looks utter garbage, if you know other wise then please let me know.

Fancy the cinema this weekend? Personally I wouldn’t bother as there is nothing new coming out for your weekend viewing pleasure, want to see something new then I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until Monday when Jason Bourne is replaced by Aaron Cross and there’s a new kids movie about a Scottish girl with ginger hair, and that is all that is going on this week. Everything that is released on Friday is either a foreign movie which has been put into English or its something which you or I have never heard of. That one (yes one) that you haven’t heard of is called 360, and if I had to say anything about it would be that it stars Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins and Rachael Weisz, that's it.
I’ll start as always with the best of the week, The Bourne Legacy is released on Monday, it’s totally revamped from the previous Bourne movies and brings a new action star to our screen in the shape of Jeremy Renner, however it also has a stellar backing cast including Rachael Weisz, Edward Norton, Scott Glenn and Stacy Keach. The Bourne Legacy is not a prequel, nor is it a sequel, this is a whole new story which picks up following the fall out of the Jason Bourne investigation and manhunt. The tag line “there was never just one” refers to the amount of agents which Tretstone produced, only some of them were more advanced than Jason Bourne, one in particular is Aaron Cross a super assassin who Tretstone want reeled back in. So on that little note I’d strap your self in for a thrill ride, check out the latest trailer below.
I put the first trailer out sometime ago now and to be honest that one hasn’t changed all that much from the original release, better now of course as we will be able to see one of 2012’s most anticipated movies come Monday.
Next up this week (Monday remember) it’s Brave the new kids movie brought to our screens by the people down at Disney Pixar, the movie stars (voices) Kelly MacDonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters and Robbie Coltrane. Brave is the story of Merida (voiced by MacDonald) a young princess who decides to take her own path in life rather than the one which is set for her, she goes on an adventure (I believe) and her reckless choice puts the kingdom into peril, now she must set things straight, check out the trailer below.
Now this is the movie that I’m the most likely to see as my oldest is really into Disney movies right now, I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched Tangled and Puss In Boots lately, so no doubt Brave is another one we will be adding to our collection when it’s released on DVD. Of course like Tangled, Puss In Boots and countless others I can think of I won’t be reviewing Brave.
Last one to mention this week, but it’s only worth your while if you live in London and have a tendency to be invited along to movie premieres (come on Stallone, invite me), The Expendables 2 sees it’s London Premiere on Monday night before being rolled out in cinemas nationwide the week after, you can be sure we’ll talk about that then, but for now check out the link above where you can see the trailer.
We seem to have hit that point in the summer where for a couple of week's the studio's decide not to release to much, don't worry though they'll be back on their A-Game soon with the release of The Bourne Legacy and The Expendables 2. I suppose they need to give the hype of The Dark Knight Rises a couple of weeks to weaken off before they go all out again. Anyway, that's not to say that there is nothing being released this week. TED comes out today, that's the biggest of the bunch, but there's also a new thriller movie about some woman and her cult and believe it or not there is another Christian Bale movie released this week.
First I'll start with Ted starring Mark Wahlberg, Seth McFarlane, Mila Kunis and the man from yesterdays movie review Giovanni Ribisi. Now Ted as you would imagine is the brain child of actor/producer and writer Seth McFarlane, the man behind the most ridiculous TV show ever Family Guy, actually if you want my honest opinion it's a complete load of shit (pardon the French). Ted however, looks like a whole lot of fun compared to talking cartoon dogs, could my Seth McFarlane opinion be changing? Well, probably not but I do think that Ted looks absolutely hilarious and if the Red-Band trailer is anything to go by then I'm sure we won't be disappointed. In Ted, John is a kid who happens to have a Christmas miracle happen by bringing his best friend and teddy bear Ted to life, problem is once Ted is brought to life he won't turn back to a teddy bear and over time he becomes incredibly inappropriate and offensives, now John (Mark Wahlberg) being an adult must make a decision, does he stay with his girlfriend (The gorgeous Mila Kunis) or ditch her for his crack addict teddy? Check out the trailer, it's the rude one.
Looks funny right? Ok, so maybe you won't go to the pictures to see Ted but it's definitely worth renting on DVD or Blu-ray when it's released.
Now onto that thriller I mentioned above, it's called The Sound Of My Voice and stars Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius and Brit Marling, now I'll be honest I've never even heard of the movie until I started researching this post (yesterday) but a quick flick around the Internet and a few reads later and The Sound of My Voice actually looks pretty good and gets a pretty decent write up. In the movie Brit Marling plays Maggie, the leader of a cult claiming to be from the future, a journalist is assigned to investigate her however things don't go to plan when he and his girlfriend start to feel the draw.
It's a movie I'll probably never get round to seeing myself but I think it was worthy of a mention here, from what I've heard Brit Marling is pretty impressive not only in this but in pretty much everything she has done.
Now I'm not going into any detail on this last movie but it's the one I mentioned above which stars Batman himself Christian Bale, it's called The Flowers of War and looks like it's a Japanese movie, all the other cast involved are people I haven't heard of and I don't think I'll be going to watch this one. The studio have pulled quite a card having it released now, I would imagine they are hoping to ride the Christian Bale wave which is currently surging through the UK box office.
It’s a pretty poor week down at you local cinema if your hoping to go see anything new. Your only option is the new animated adventure The Lorax, and let’s face it unless you have kids who are already board after the first week of their school summer holiday, then that’s the only way your going to see this one. Don’t worry though, if you want to go see something a little more adult (not in the way your thinking) themed the The Dark Knight Rises is still showing all over the country and the que should have gone down a bit by now.
Ok, onto the matter at hand, telling you about The Lorax Starring the voice talents of Danny De Vito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift and the grandma from Wedding Crashers Betty White. I actually heard about The Lorax a good while a go now, maybe even last year when I saw the trailer Glen posted at 1 Man, 365 Movies (a blog which has since disappeared), I’ll be honest I wasn’t really that interested then nor am I that interested now. The movie is based on the books about Dr Suess, again I am not interested in those nor have I ever read one. I’m not going to go into a detailed synopsis for you (can’t really be bothered) but basically the movie is the story of a young boy named Ted (Efron) who is seeking to win the heart of his dream girl Audrey (Swift), she wants to see a real tree and thanks to the world they live in they are pretty hard to come by. Ted goes about his ways to try and fix the environmental problem but is hampered in his efforts by the corrupt Mayor of Thneed-Ville (voiced by Rob Riggle). Quite where Dr Suess’ The Lorax fits in I’m not sure but he is a protester against the environmental problems and my guess is he probably ends up helping out Ted and Audrey in some way, I’ve posted the trailer below for you to check out.
You off to see The Lorax then? Yeah like me you’re only going to see this if the kids drag you there on Saturday afternoon, luckily I’m on a works night out this Saturday which starts around 5pm so sitting in the cinema won’t be an option for me.
Ok, so I didn’t manage to get any cinema releases out to you last week, luckily you didn’t miss to much as nothing that great was released. That would be the case again this week, but for very good reason. Today sees the UK release of one of the most anticipated movies in history The Dark Knight Rises, it promises to be one of the biggest movie openings of all time having already taken 25m in pre-release orders (that’s just in the US). Not a Batman fan? Then don’t worry, there are a couple of others who have braved releases and one in particular looks pretty good.
I’ll start as always with the biggest release of the week The Dark Knight Rises starring Christian Bale in his last outing as Batman along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Liam Neeson, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard and Morgan Freeman. The hype surrounding this movie has been going on for some time now so there is nothing further that I can really add, but just in case you have been hiding under a rock for the last year and a half here’s a quick synopsis of what you can expect to see from the latest superhero blockbuster. The Dark Knight Rises picks up the action 8 years after The Dark Knight, Batman is still in hiding (I believe) having taken the wrap for Dent’s crimes during the previous movie. However, there is now a new terrorist in town named Bane (Tom Hardy) who is planning on destroying Gotham City, with the authorities struggling to cope Batman fells compelled to come out his cave (so to speak) and help defeat the group. I have the latest trailer here for you now, but if you like you can go check out the very first trailer release or even check out the Super Bowl sneak peak I posted a while back.
I’ve never seen The Dark Knight, although I am hoping to get round to that this weekend. I have reviewed Batman Begins which was Bale’s first outing as The Dark Knight and I thought that was a brilliant movie. One thing I will say for The Dark Knight Rise is that you better make sure you are sitting comfy in the theatre because the movie run time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Now like I say The Dark Knight Rises is not the only theatrical release this week, a couple of others have braved to go against the grain. The first of those to mention would be Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap, it’s more of a documentary than a movie and it focuses on rap music (obviously). The director is non other than 80’s and early 90’s rap superstar Ice-T who now has his own reality TV show on the E! Entertainment network, for the documentary Ice pulls favours from friends old and new including Chuck D, Ice Cube, B-Real, Common, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9 and most famous of them all – probably Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kanye Westand Dexter season 6 guest star Mos Def. They all go about some interviews and exclusive performances which show rap music from its very beginning charting the music’s rise to international prominence thanks to the guys mentioned above as well as Biggie Smalls and Tupac. I wouldn’t say that I’m a hardcore rap music fan by any means but I do like a lot of the music that some of the guys mentioned above put out. I will probably see this movie as it’s the kind of thing I like to watch, man. I feel a music post coming up soon featuring rap music only.
Last one to mention now is a movie I haven’t heard of named Lola Versus, due to other releases this week it will probably remain unheard of but the cast is quite impressive and if your date isn’t up for all action movies this week then this may be more your squeeze. Starring Greta Gerwig, Joel Kinnaman, Zoe Lister Jones, Bill Pullman and Debra Winger, Lola Versus is the story of Lola (again, obviously) played by Grewig. At the age of 29 she is dumped by her fiancรฉ just three weeks before their wedding, Lola reacts by getting one of her friends to come on a series of adventures with her in order to help her deal with almost being 30. Not my idea of fun but I’m sure someone somewhere will go see it, check out the trailer below.
If you remember last weeks post then you’ll have read about the new killer movie starring Matthew McConaughey which I told you not to take your girl to on the first date together, that was pretty much all there was on offer last weekend but, luckily this week is looking a whole lot better with three big (ish) releases (or re-releases) and one which may interest the biggest of movie fans. So what we got? Well there is the new Spiderman movie (already?), the massive and highly anticipated remake of Total Recall, pop star Katy Perry is entering the movie business and Willem Dafoe is hunting a tiger in Tasmania.
I’ll start as always with what I think is going to be the week’s biggest earner, Total Recall stars Colin Farrel, Bokeem Woodbine, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Beil and Bryan Cranston. Now, I’ve never seen the original Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (it’s been recorded on my planner long enough) so I don’t have anything to compare this movie to but from the trailers I have seen it looks pretty impressive and Colin Farrell seems a little more kick ass than usual. Like I say I’ve never seen the 1990 version but I’ll presume that the following synopsis covers a very similar pattern. In the movie Douglas Quaid (Farrell) is a factory worker who puts himself forward for a mind-trip, just a little time away from his mondaying life of fundraising and his loving wife. The “trip” however goes badly wrong and Quaid now equipped with the mind of a super spy / assassin finds himself on the run from the police. Check out the trailer and let me know what you think.
Now I don’t know about you but I think that looks pretty good, so much so in fact that I could probably say that I’ll see this one before I see the 1990 version. Ever seen the original? Now I’m going to move on to Spider-Man, well, The Amazing Spider-Man actually a movie which I can’t believe has been remade already. Never mind, I’ll get to that in a moment this new Spider-Man movie stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Dennis Leary and Martin Sheen. Considering that Spider-Man 3 only came out in 2007 it’s a little hard to grasp that they are bringing another one out so soon, and also replacing Toby Maguire as Peter Parker, let’s face it Toby Maguire still looks like he’s in high school so we can just presume that he turned down the offer, anyway whatever the reason for bringing out a remake so quick I’m sure there must be a story to tell. I’ll be perfectly honest here and say that I really couldn’t give two hoots about this movie so, therefore I’m not going into detail on the story but you can be sure that Spider-Man is on a collision course as usual with resident bad guy and his fathers former partner Dr Curt Connors also known as The Lizard, check out the trailer below and let me know what you think.
I’m sure comic book fans will probably love this but the three movies starring Toby were a big enough stretch for me so I don’t think I’ll be making any effort to see this movie, In fact I don’t even think I have seen all three of the previous ones.
Now I’ll move onto pop star Katy Perry who this week sees the release of her new movie / documentary Part of Me. No stars to mention here, other than Katy of course, everyone else in the movie is in Katy’s life in some way or another, be it a dancer or part of her family. The documentary follows Katy’s life both on and off the stage and I’d imagine that if you like Katy Perry’s music then you’ll probably love this, the documentary currently sits as the most popular release of the week on IMDB but for me I think I’ll give it a miss. I saw Katy on Graham Norton a couple of weeks back and she’s a nice girl, but in my opinion her ex-husband Russell Brand is a heck of a lot funnier. Like Katy Perry? Last movie to mention briefly is The Hunter, it stars Willem Dafoe (who used to be in Spider-Man with Toby), Sam Neill from that shitty TV show Alcatraz and Strike Back’s Sullivan Stapleton. In the movie Dafoe plays Martin David, a former mercenary who is sent to Tasmania by some rich company to hunt for the last remaining Tasmanian tiger. Again, I’ll be honest here and tell you I have never seen the trailer for this movie, the synopsis is enough for me, it’s another miss I’m afraid.
It’s a lame title I know but you may have noticed I’m trying to give everything a suggestive title these days as that’s how Google want us to roll, and since they practically own the Internet I’ll go along with it. Nothing much to report at your local cinema this week, it’s all pretty crap really apart from McConaughey attempting to whack someone’s mother the rest is just cannon fodder which I’ll attempt to shed some light on further down the page.
I’ll start with Killer Joe starring Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, JunoTemple and ThomasHaydenChurch. I’ll be honest I’m not really McConaughey’s biggest fan he really should stick to romantic comedy’s for me. At the same time I think Killer Joe looks like it may be McConaghey’s best effort for a while, fair enough it’s not original and the story’s been done before but I think this movie may just provide you with a few laughs this weekend. In the movie McConaughey plays…. You guessed it Joe, well Killer Joe Cooper actually. Joe is as you’ve guessed again a contract killer for hire, he is approached by a young kid (I’m presuming Emile Hirsch) who has got himself into trouble with debt, be it drugs, money or indeed both. The kid is in such quandary with money that his life is now in danger, being nice and all he decides that Killer Joe should be paid to whack his mother in order for him to collect the insurance money. Something tells me Killer Joe's plot won’t be quite that simple, check out the trailer and let me know what you think.
Killer Joe has had a pretty good write up on the things I’ve seen with people even bigging up romantic lead Matthew McConaughey as a pretty convincing ruthless killer. Warning though, I won’t say to much but from what I’ve heard this isn’t the sort of movie to go see on your first date thanks to the behaviour of Joe your date may opt to walk home and refuse to ever text, speak or even see you again.
Let’s just presume that it is your first date on Saturday night and I’ve just ruined your idea, what are you going do now? Well, like I say the rest of the selection is not great but I think Your Sister’s Sister starring Emily Blunt, Mark Duplass and Rosmarie Dewitt may well be your best option. To sum it up, it looks like a soppy chick flick which you probably won’t enjoy but it will ensure one thing. Your date will be more than happy to leave the cinema with you as apposed to making some toilet excuse and having one of her friends come and pick her up without you knowing (honestly that’s never happened to me). In the movie Emily Blunt plays Iris a girl who invites her friend Jack (Mark Duplass) to stay at her family island retreat (must be nice), whilst there Jack gets himself rather drunk and cheers himself up with Iris’ sister Hannah (Rosmarie Dewitt) which as you can imagine causes a few problems for the rest of the holiday. Now that’s first date appropriate wouldn’t you say? Remember if it just happens to be your second date and your immensely comfortable with each other already then McConaughey’s offering may not be out of the question.
That’s pretty much all there is to talk about this week, there are other movies released of course but most of them are just fillers, although Friends With Kids does come with a pretty Hollywood A-List cast including Megan Fox (Transformers), Adam Scott (Step Brothers)and Kristen Wiig. Mind you, on IMDB when you have this movie page open one of the suggestions “you may also like” is Bridesmaids, which if you read my review know already is a terrible movie, so for that reason I’m going to give Friends With Kids a miss. Also released this week is Joyful Noise, now unless you like Opera music or musicals I don’t think this will be for you. A movie named Dark Horse which I’ve never even heard of and finally there is some new scary ass Horror movie which I definitely won’t be going to see.
Not great cinema this week. That, of course is my opinion maybe yours is different so, just in case I'll give you a quick run through of Cuba Gooding Jr's new movie and the most popular movie of the week on IMDB, which to be honest I haven't even heard of.
I'll start with that oh so popular movie, its named Ill Manors and stars Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press and Danielle Brent. Ill Manors may not have been heard of by many people but I have to be honest and say that after watching the trailer I'm pretty impressed with what it has to offer. Ill Manors is a British movie written and directed by Ben Drew, now you will have heard of Ben I guarantee that, only you will know him as recording artist Plan B who is a pretty cool guy and I've no doubt that coolness will shine through in this movie. Ill Manors follows the story of several different people and is based in London's Forest Gate area, it's a gritty crime drama showing that we are all products of our environment and everyone's stories cross over at some point with each individual one being represented by a different rap song. Now let's talk about that new Cuba Gooding Jr movie Red Tails which also stars Gerald Mcraney,David Otelowo and Terence Howard. Red Tails will have a much bigger budget than Ill Manors no doubt but I honestly think the movie up top is the better option this week. I am a big fan of Cuba Gooding Jr, really like the guy actually but since winning his Oscar for shouting "Show Me The Money" his movies have tended to be more on budget straight to DVD side of things, don't get me wrong sometimes those movie are better than the one which go to cinemas, they just don't get the eyeballs they deserve. Red Tails is a war movie set in Italy, 1944 and follows a group of African American pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen who have been kept segregated before finally getting the chance to display there talent in the air. It's a pretty decent week down at your local cinema and as always Movies Music & Television is here to give you the low down on what's worth your time going to see. Last week saw the release of Avengers Assemble and although this week is good, it's going to take something pretty special in order to take the top spot away from what will surely be one of the highest grossing movies of all time. So, take a look below as a bunch of American teenagers reunite, a couple are in a love story, Jason Statham kicks ass and Elisabeth Olsen is scared sh*tless in some creepy house.
I'll start as always with the weeks top release, in all honesty it could have been one of three but in a throw back to my teens I'm going with American Reunion starring Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Sean William Scott, Chris Klein and Tara Reid.
Cast your mind way back to 1999 when four geeky high school kids were on a mission to loose their virginity, now they are back in their home town of East Green Falls, Michigan for the weekend and their about to learn what each other have been up to in the last decade. Thing is, now there is a new girl in town named Kara who is a mighty cute high school senior looking to give away her flower.
No doubt this will be hilarious and it's great to see the original cast back together, the American Pie movies have spawned a mass of straight to DVD sequels non of which were really any good. Personally, I think they should have left it at the American Wedding otherwise known as American Pie 3, but I'll definitely be giving this one a go.
A romantic drama to mention now named The Lucky One starring Zac Effron, Taylor Schilling, Blyth Danner and Riley Thomas Stewart.
Don't really know a lot about this one, but basically it's the story of a Marine (Zac Effron) who has served for his country in Iraq, he returns to America and travels to Louisiana where he searches for a girl who he believes was his good luck charm whilst he was away serving in the forces.
Not really interested in this one at all, it's a slushy chick flick which I'm sure my wife will love. For me, well its a little to girly and to think that Zac Effron has been in the Marines is just a little to unbelievable for me.
Kick ass time now and it's a movie which I gave you the trailer for months ago now, Safe starring Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon and Robert John Burke.
Jason Statham plays Luke Wright a former elite agent who becomes involved in a situation which is not really of his own doing (always seems to happen to Statham!), what results is a Chinese girl who is abducted by the Triads before Statham rescues her. From there he must keep her "safe" as she knows the code to a very important safe, something like that anyway.
I love Jason Statham movies, for me they are just great popcorn flick and this will be no different. He always plays a former elite agent, but he always kicks ass so for that reason Safe gets my vote.
Last one to mention now it's Silent House starring Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese and Eric Sheffer Stevens, really it's just Olsen.
In what looks like a psychological horror Elisabeth Olsen plays a young girl who goes to her family lakeside retreat with her father, from that point things quickly spiral out of control and she finds herself unable to get out the house or contact the outside world, creepy right?
Yeah well you know me by now, I'm a total wuss when it comes to stuff like this so I will be avoiding whichever movie screen is showing this, but not to worry there is still plenty others to choose from, and I haven't seen Avengers Assemble yet.
Well, it’s Friday and as always I’m here with all the latest UK cinema releases. It would seem that many movie companies have simply not bothered this week and with very good reason too. Today sees the UK release of Avengers Assemble better known as the Avengers, it's had to change its name here in the UK due to the original Avengers movie
being released here some time ago, or at least that’s what I think Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk) told Graham Norton last Friday night.
As you’ve probably guessed from those first few lines the first movie and only one I’ll be covering in any detail this week is The Avengers, I’m going to call it that because in all honesty I think Avengers Assemble sounds terrible, nothing like a movie title, more like something Sam L, leader of S.H.I.E.L.D will be shouting during the movie. Anyway The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L Jackson and Gwenyth Paltrow, an impressive list I’m sure you’ll agree.
S.H.I.E.L.D is the worlds leading peace keeping agency lead by director Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), his only super power that I know of is that he’s so mother f**king cool. Any how World peace is about to be interrupted by some dude named Loki (Tom Hiddilston) and Nick Fury is forced to “Assemble” a group of superhero’s including Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and The Hulk in order to help keep the peace, check out the trailer and let me know what you think and indeed if you already have your movie ticket ordered.
You know me I’m no fan of comic books, can’t say I’ve ever read one. I only figured out who S.H.I.E.L.D were when I watched Iron Man 2, I’ve never seen Captain America, don’t know who either Hawkeye or BlackWidow (other than seeing Scarlett in Leather for Iron Man 2) are, and I’ve only seen the Lou Ferrigno and Eric Bana versions of the Hulk. Let’s just leave it with I’m not authority on anything to do with Marvel comics but I do want to see what all the fuss is about and watch this movie.
Now, as I explained above not really much else out this week and let’s face it you only came here to read my witty humour and check out The Avengers trailer, right? So, in order to release a movie the same week as that one above you better come up with a good name that captures peoples imaginations, some options (also released this week) Damsels in Distress, Albert Nobbs and The Monk, they don’t quite cut it do they? So they came up with Strippers vs Werewolves. Now, as you’d imagine I’m a guy so naturally I’m going to click on anything that says strippers, especially if the word “male” doesn’t come before it. In this case clicking will be as far as I go, I can’t even be bothered to give you the synopsis of this crappy cheap as shit movie. So, instead just watch the trailer have a laugh and then go back to the top and watch how people go about making a proper movie.
I have to tell you straight off this is not the best week ever for movies, probably more like one of the worst in fact, but as always here at Movies Music & Television I’ll take you through what may be worth your time this weekend. You have a new super scary (I think) horror, Independence Day on a boat and Butch Cassidy is back fresh out the 60’s.
I’ll start with my pick of the week as always, its Battleship starring Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch and popstar Rhianna
Battleship is based on Hasbro comic book novel Combat Game, and follows an international fleet of ships who are on a Naval war games exercise. Whilst there they encounter an alien force known as “The Regent” and a air and sea battle ensues.
I don’t know anything about the books or Hasbro comics but when I was younger we had a video game named Battleships where you used to have put coordinates in and try to blow your opponent (the computer) out the water, however I don’t think it’s the same thing. In all honesty if I see any of the movies released this week Battleship will probably be it, check out the trailer below.
Next on this week’s list is Blackthorn starring Sam Shepard, Eduardo Noriega and Stephen Rea
Blackthorn is set in Bolivia and follows legendary cowboy Butch Cassidy (Sam Shepard) who now calls himself James Blackthorn. Butch or James (whatever you want to call him) is making one last attempt to get home, a journey which sees him team up with a young robber, and the pair become a target for gangs and cops, or lawmen as they were known then.
I have no interest in Westerns at all, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid released in 1969 is a movie I’ve never seen, nor do I intend watching. If Butch was around then what’s he doing in Bolivia?
Last one to mention this week is The Cabin in The Woods starring Kristen Connelly, Chris Hemswroth and Anna Hutchinson
It’s the latest teenage type horror thing that you’ll all love, a bunch of people go to stay in a creepy cabin which is in the middle of nowhere, well apart from the woods obviously, when there they get more than they bargain for and must try and figure out the truth behind The Cabin in The Woods.
Horror is not a genre that I’m a fan of and from what I’ve seen of this movie up to now it seems a lot like Cabin Fever, a movie I watched expecting to get a scare. All I got was bored.
It's not the best week ever for cinema releases but I think there are a couple of new thrillers in this weeks mix which haven't been that heavily promoted, meaning they probably shouldn't go un-missed. As always I'm here to give you the run down of what may be worth your time at the cinema this week.
My top pick has to go to The Cold Light Of Day, the movie comes with a pretty decent cast including Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, it seems like a decent action thriller.
Cavill plays Will Shaw, a Wall Street trader who has flown to Spain for a sailing holiday with his parents Martin (Willis) and Laurie (Caroline Goodall). Will goes for a quick dip and returns to the boat to find his parents have been kidnapped, quickly Will is confronted by the people responsible and learns more than he knows about his father and what his parents captors are after.
This is the kind of movie I like best so I am probably being a little in favour, but it does look like a pretty good popcorn flick.
Next up this week is Headhunters which stars Aksel Hennie, Synnove Macody Lund and Nikolaj Coster-Waldu, don't worry I haven't heard of any of those people either.
Headhunters is a Norweigan movie about a high powered executive head hunter who has a bit of a dark side, kind of like Dexter this guy moonlights from his day job and by night becomes an accomplished multi million pound art thief.
The trailer looks decent enough, lots of action, but I'm put off with all the subtitles. I say this looks good but I'll probably never get round to watching it. It does seem like a pretty good crime thriller.
Last of the new releases is Mirror Mirror: The Untold Adventures of Snow White starring Julia Roberts, Lilly Collins, Armie Hammer and Sean Bean.
It's a story of Princess' and Prince' and I really have no interest at all, it's for kids of course and it supposedly a magical fairy-tale. Basically Snow White is banished from her Kingdom when an evil Queen takes over, she enlists the help of 7 Prince' to help her win back her birthright.
Last but not least is the re-release of James Cameron's epic Titanic, the movie was released in UK cinemas January 1998, now it's back and pimped out in 3D for our viewing pleasure. Personally I saw it back then and have seen it many times since, as good as it is I won't be spending £12 - £15 on a cinema ticket to watch it in 3D.
I’m back as always giving you the low down on what may and may not be worth your time going to the cinema over this weekend, and I’m afraid that once again I don’t really have a lot to report on new UK movie releases, it’s not a strong week at all. You are lucky in one sense that this weeks top movie currently sits at number 1 in IMDB rankings, and the other is a real story and stars real people rather than actors pretending to be people.
I’ll start as always with this week’s biggest release The Hunger Games is considered by many to be one of the most anticipated movies of this year. Given all the hype I really haven’t heard too much on it, so let’s see what light I can shed in my summary below.
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, The Hunger Games is a new action / sci-fi / drama based in the not-to-distant future. North America has collapsed and the country is now split into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives are selected from the lottery to take place in the televised Hunger Games. The 24 competitors are then pitted against each other in a fight to the death with the whole nation forced to watch on TV.
Like I said above it’s not something I have seen a lot about, and I’m yet to decide weather it’s done enough to get my interest. It’s one of those where I’ll probably wait to hear a few opinions before giving it any further consideration. Check out the trailer for The Hunger Games and let me know what you think.
Now to that movie with real people that I was telling you about up top, Act of Valor is the name and it’s another that I haven’t heard a great deal about but I do think it’s more promising than The Hunger Games.
Starring: Alexander Asefa, Jeffrey Barnachea and Kenny Calderon, Act of Valor is a new action /adventure / thriller movie which stars actual serving U.S Navy SEALs and is inspired by true events. The SEALs are sent on a rescue mission to recover a CIA agent however, whilst there they discover a plot against the U.S. The team are then sent on a worldwide manhunt as they race to stop a coordinated attack.
Like I said not to many details but I do think this will be a movie worth going to see, if it’s realism that your after then Act of Valor may just have what your looking for. The Act of Valor trailer is here for you to check out.
Not much on this week right? Other than the two I mentioned above there is a French (I think) movie out, that’s about some kid on a bike and this week’s other release sees some guy named Bill released from prison to discover his kids have been abandoned by their mother.
